Suzanne Kirby, M.D., Ph.D.

Vero Beach, FLA (March 10, 2017) — Indian River Medical Center (IRMC) welcomes Medical Hematologist Oncologist Suzanne Kirby, M.D., Ph.D., to its multi-specialty group of physicians.

Dr. Kirby earned her Doctor of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, NC. She earned her Ph.D. in the Department of Pathology at UNC-CH and completed a postgraduate research fellowship in Pathology, working with her mentor and Nobel Prize laureate, Dr. Oliver Smithies. Dr. Kirby completed her residency in Internal Medicine and was selected for the clinical scientist track Fellowship program in Hematology/Oncology at UNC-CH. She furthered her training in clinical Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplantation at Palmetto-Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, SC.

Prior to joining the staff at IRMC, Dr. Kirby served as an associate professor in the UNC-CH Division of Hematology/Oncology and as a Stem Cell Transplant physician with a joint appointment in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. During her tenure there she received NIH RO1 and numerous other research grants for targeting a proliferative advantage to hematopoietic stem cells. Dr. Kirby worked as a hematology/oncology physician and principal investigator at Waverly Hematology/Oncology in Cary, NC and served as Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a member of the Carolina Cardiovascular Biology Center and Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Throughout Dr. Kirby’s medical and academic career she has earned numerous honors and awards including the Leukemia Society of America Special Fellow Award, the American Society of Hematology Scholar Award, as well as a highly competitive Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Development Award.
