Excellence in cancer care and research have been hallmarks of Duke Health for decades. The Duke Cancer Institute has a national and global reputation as one of the foremost centers for cancer diagnosis, treatment, research, education and training. Duke’s vision is to accelerate research advances related to cancer and to translate these discoveries into the most advanced cancer care to patients.
Following the remarkable transformation of cardiovascular care at IRMC with the addition of the Welsh Heart Center’s affiliation with Duke Health, Indian River Medical Center learned how beneficial a close working relationship with an academic medical center can be to both patients and the clinicians at IRMC. The Scully-Welsh Cancer Center is also a Duke Health affiliate and this excellence in oncology expertise translates into access to the latest guidelines and cancer research as well as entry into potentially life-saving clinical research trials. The affiliation provides access to the most current training and staff education when it comes to cancer and cancer-related health issues.
Duke protocols are accessible for cancer patients receiving treatment at the Scully-Welsh Cancer Center. As advances are made in the academic arena related to genetics and the biological detail of individual cancer diagnoses, the benefit of that work becomes available to patients for the planning of their targeted therapies. All of this adds up to an increased level of wellness, so our patients receive the higher standard of cancer care and treatment they want and deserve – right here in our community.
